How to measure your stride
For the most accurate steps-to-miles conversion, measure your own stride:
- Mark a 20–30 ft straight line.
- Walk it at normal pace, counting steps.
- Stride length = distance / number of steps.
Enter that number (in feet) above and you’re done.
Formulas
miles = steps × stride(ft) ÷ 5280
km = miles × 1.60934
calories ≈ steps × 0.04 (rough walking estimate; adjust to your weight and speed)
FAQ
1. Why do different sites give different miles for 10,000 steps?
Because they assume different stride lengths. A taller person or someone walking briskly covers more ground per step. That’s why we let you pick / set stride.
2. Is 10,000 steps a day a good target?
It’s a popular benchmark, but what’s “good” depends on age, baseline activity and goals. Use this tool to translate your steps into real distance so you can compare it over time.
3. Can I use this for running?
Yes, but running stride is usually longer. Try 3.0 ft or measure your actual run stride for better accuracy.
