How this Yukon tax calculator works
This tool estimates your combined federal and Yukon territorial income tax, plus CPP and EI, based on typical current-year brackets. It is designed to be fast and easy to use for “what‑if” scenarios and paycheque planning.
1. Federal income tax brackets (approximate)
For illustration, the calculator uses a standard set of progressive federal brackets similar to recent CRA tables:
- 15% on the first $55,000 of taxable income
- 20.5% on the next $55,000 (over $55,000 up to $110,000)
- 26% on the next $60,000 (over $110,000 up to $170,000)
- 29% on the next $100,000 (over $170,000 up to $270,000)
- 33% on income over $270,000
2. Yukon territorial tax brackets (approximate)
Yukon applies its own progressive tax on the same taxable income base:
- 6.4% on the first $55,000
- 9% on the next $55,000
- 10.9% on the next $60,000
- 12.8% on the next $100,000
- 15% on income over $270,000
These rates are representative and may differ slightly from the official Government of Yukon tables for a specific year.
3. CPP and EI contributions
When you select employment income, the calculator also estimates:
- CPP contributions – a percentage of pensionable earnings between a basic exemption and a yearly maximum.
- EI premiums – a percentage of insurable earnings up to a yearly maximum.
For simplicity, the tool uses rounded contribution rates and maximums typical of recent years. Actual CPP/EI amounts on your pay stub may differ slightly.
4. From gross income to net pay
The calculator converts your per‑period income to an annual figure, applies the brackets, then converts back to your chosen frequency:
Step 1 – Annualize income
\( \text{Annual income} = \text{Income per period} \times \text{Periods per year} \)
Step 2 – Apply brackets
\( \text{Federal tax} = \sum (\text{taxable slice} \times \text{federal rate}) \)
\( \text{Yukon tax} = \sum (\text{taxable slice} \times \text{territorial rate}) \)
Step 3 – Add CPP & EI (if employment)
\( \text{Total deductions} = \text{Federal} + \text{Yukon} + \text{CPP} + \text{EI} \)
Step 4 – Net pay
\( \text{Net annual} = \text{Annual income} - \text{Total deductions} \)
\( \text{Net per period} = \text{Net annual} / \text{Periods per year} \)
Example: $60,000 salary in Yukon
Suppose you earn $60,000 per year in employment income in Yukon and are paid bi‑weekly (26 pay periods):
- Enter $60,000 as gross income and choose Annual frequency; or enter about $2,307.69 with Bi‑weekly frequency.
- Select Employment income and the current tax year.
- Click Calculate Yukon tax.
The calculator will show approximate annual and per‑paycheque amounts for:
- Federal income tax
- Yukon territorial tax
- CPP and EI contributions
- Net pay and effective tax rates
Limitations and assumptions
- No personal tax credits, age amounts, disability amounts, or other deductions are applied.
- No RRSP contributions, union dues, childcare expenses, or other adjustments are included.
- The tool assumes you are a Yukon resident for the full tax year.
- CPP/EI are simplified and may not match your exact pay stub.
For filing your return or making important financial decisions, always refer to the Canada Revenue Agency and the Government of Yukon, or consult a qualified tax professional.
FAQ
Does Yukon have a provincial sales tax?
No. Yukon does not levy a separate provincial sales tax. However, the 5% federal GST still applies to most purchases. This calculator focuses on income tax, not GST.
Can I use this for payroll estimates?
Yes. By selecting a pay frequency (weekly, bi‑weekly, monthly) and entering your gross pay per period, you can estimate how much tax and CPP/EI might be deducted from each paycheque.
Why are my results different from my T4 or pay stub?
Employers use CRA payroll tables and consider credits, benefits, and other factors. This calculator uses simplified brackets and does not include all credits, so it will not match official numbers exactly. Treat it as a planning tool, not an official assessment.
