WPM Calculator (Words Per Minute)

Measure your typing speed, accuracy, and net WPM, or estimate how long it takes to type or read any text.

How this WPM calculator works

This tool lets you measure your typing or reading speed in multiple ways:

  • Live typing test – type directly in the browser and see your WPM update in real time.
  • Manual input – enter words and time from any external test or exam.
  • Time estimator – paste any text and estimate how long it will take at your WPM.

Formulas used

1. Gross WPM (words per minute)

\[ \text{Gross WPM} = \frac{\text{Total words}}{\text{Time in minutes}} \]

Time in minutes is:

\[ \text{Time (min)} = \frac{\text{Seconds}}{60} \]

2. Net WPM (penalizing errors)

A common convention is to subtract one word for each error:

\[ \text{Net WPM} = \frac{\text{Total words} - \text{Errors}}{\text{Time in minutes}} \]

If errors are not provided, net WPM = gross WPM.

3. Accuracy

\[ \text{Accuracy (\%)} = \frac{\text{Total words} - \text{Errors}}{\text{Total words}} \times 100 \]

4. Characters per minute (CPM)

\[ \text{CPM} = \frac{\text{Characters}}{\text{Time in minutes}} \]

What is a good WPM?

Typing speed benchmarks vary by context, but these ranges are widely used:

  • < 30 WPM – beginner, may feel slow for everyday computer work.
  • 30–40 WPM – basic, enough for light email and browsing.
  • 40–60 WPM – average office worker.
  • 60–80 WPM – above average, comfortable for most professional tasks.
  • 80–100 WPM – fast typist.
  • 100+ WPM – very fast, competitive typing level.

For reading, typical adult reading speed is around 200–250 WPM for non-technical text, and 100–150 WPM for dense or technical material.

Tips to improve your WPM and accuracy

  • Focus on accuracy first; speed will naturally increase over time.
  • Use all ten fingers and keep them on the home row (ASDF / JKL;).
  • Avoid looking at the keyboard; train your muscle memory.
  • Practice short sessions (5–10 minutes) daily instead of rare long sessions.
  • Use the same text multiple times to track improvement objectively.

FAQ

Can I use this for speech or dictation speed?

Yes. If you record a speech and know how many words it contains and how long it lasted, enter those values in the manual input section. The calculator will show your speaking WPM.

Does this WPM calculator use 5-characters-per-word?

In live mode, the calculator counts actual words (separated by spaces) and characters. If you want to compare with standards that define one word as five characters, you can approximate by using:

\[ \text{WPM (5-char)} = \frac{\text{Characters}}{5 \times \text{Time in minutes}} \]

The displayed WPM is based on real word count, which is easier to interpret for everyday use.

Why is my WPM different from other typing tests?

Different sites use slightly different rules for counting words, handling backspaces, and penalizing errors. This calculator shows transparent formulas and lets you adjust errors manually so you can match any standard you prefer.
