How the workdays calculator works

This workdays calculator lets you:

  • Count how many workdays (business days) fall between two dates.
  • Add or subtract a number of workdays to find a future or past date.
  • Customize which weekdays are considered workdays (e.g., Monday–Friday or Sunday–Thursday).
  • Exclude weekends and public holidays, plus your own custom days off.

Basic logic

The calculator walks through the calendar one day at a time and applies three checks:

  1. Is this date within the selected range (respecting whether you include the start/end dates)?
  2. Is this date a workday according to your workweek settings?
  3. Is this date a holiday that should be excluded?

If the date passes all checks, it is counted as a workday.

Conceptual formula

Let D be all calendar days in the range, W the set of weekdays you marked as workdays, and H the set of holidays to exclude. Then:

Workdays = |{ d ∈ D : weekday(d) ∈ W and d ∉ H }|

Typical use cases

  • Project planning: estimate how many working days a task spans.
  • Payroll & HR: count payable workdays between two dates.
  • Delivery & SLAs: add N business days to a start date to get a due date.
  • Personal planning: see how many workdays remain until a vacation or deadline.

Step-by-step: count workdays between two dates

  1. Select the “Count Workdays Between Dates” tab.
  2. Enter the start and end dates.
  3. Choose whether to include the start and/or end dates.
  4. Adjust the workweek days and holiday region if needed.
  5. Optionally add custom holidays in the Settings tab.
  6. Click “Calculate workdays” to see the total and a detailed breakdown.

FAQ

Does the order of dates matter?

If you accidentally enter an end date that is earlier than the start date, the calculator will automatically swap them so the range is always forward in time.

What about half-days?

This tool counts whole workdays only. If you need half-days, you can approximate by treating them as 0.5 days and adjusting your expectations, or by splitting the period into separate ranges.

Are holiday lists guaranteed to be complete?

No. Public holiday presets are simplified and may not include regional or one-off holidays. For critical applications (contracts, payroll, legal deadlines), always verify dates and add missing holidays manually.
