How the VAT calculator works

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax applied to most goods and services in many countries. This calculator lets you:

  • add VAT to a net price (price before tax)
  • remove VAT from a gross price (price including tax)
  • use standard or custom VAT rates for any country

Formulas used

1. Add VAT to a net price

Let:

  • N = net price (without VAT)
  • r = VAT rate (for example 22% → 0.22)

Then:

\(\text{VAT} = N \times r\)

\(\text{Gross} = N \times (1 + r)\)

2. Remove VAT from a gross price

Let:

  • G = gross price (with VAT)
  • r = VAT rate

Then:

\(\text{Net} = \dfrac{G}{1 + r}\)

\(\text{VAT} = G - \text{Net}\)

Example: adding VAT

Suppose you sell a product with a net price of 100 and a VAT rate of 22%.

  • VAT = 100 × 0.22 = 22
  • Gross price = 100 × 1.22 = 122

Example: removing VAT

You have a gross price of 122 and you know VAT is 22%.

  • Net price = 122 ÷ 1.22 = 100
  • VAT = 122 − 100 = 22

Common VAT rates (overview only)

Always check your local tax authority for the latest official rates. As a rough guide:

  • Italy: standard 22%, reduced rates for some goods and services
  • Germany: standard 19%, reduced 7% for essentials
  • Spain: standard 21%, reduced 10% and 4%
  • France: standard 20%, reduced 10%, 5.5%, 2.1%
  • UK: standard 20%, reduced 5%, zero‑rated for some items

This calculator lets you enter any rate so you can adapt it to your country and sector.

VAT vs. sales tax

VAT is charged at each stage of the supply chain on the value added, while sales tax is usually charged only at the final sale to the consumer. The formulas above work for both, as long as you know the applicable percentage.
