Tutti i calcoli si basano rigorosamente sulle formule e sui dati forniti da questa fonte.
The Formula Explained
We apply Utah’s flat rate for the selected year to the annualized taxable base, then subtract nonrefundable credits (capped at the pre-credit tax).
Given pay frequency factor f, gross per period G, pre-tax per period P, annual additions A, annual subtractions S, annual credits C, and rate r:
$$ \begin{aligned} \text{Annual Gross} \; AG &= G \times f \\ \text{Annual Pre-tax} \; AP &= P \times f \\ \text{Taxable Base} \; T &= \max\big(0,\; AG - AP + A - S\big) \\ \text{Pre-credit Tax} \; PC &= r \times T \\ \text{Credits Applied} \; C_a &= \min(C,\; PC) \\ \text{Tax After Credits} \; TAC &= PC - C_a \\ \text{Effective Rate} \; e &= \begin{cases} \dfrac{TAC}{AG} & AG > 0 \\ 0 & AG = 0 \end{cases} \\ \text{Per-Period Tax} \; t_p &= \dfrac{TAC}{f} \end{aligned} $$
Glossary of Variables
Variable | Meaning |
---|---|
Tax Year | Determines Utah’s official flat rate used in the calculation. |
Pay Frequency | Annualization factor: Annual=1, Monthly=12, Semi-monthly=24, Biweekly=26, Weekly=52. |
Income Amount | Gross income for the selected frequency. |
Pre-tax Deductions | Per-period pre-tax amounts (e.g., 401(k), HSA) for this estimate. |
Utah Additions (A) | Annual state-specific additions to income. |
Utah Subtractions (S) | Annual state-specific subtractions from income. |
Credits (C) | Annual total of nonrefundable Utah credits you expect to claim. |
Taxable Base (T) | Annual income subject to the Utah flat tax after adjustments. |
Pre-credit Tax (PC) | Utah tax before credits: rate × taxable base. |
Tax After Credits (TAC) | Final Utah tax after subtracting nonrefundable credits. |
Effective Rate (e) | Tax after credits divided by annual gross income. |
Per-Period Tax (t_p) | Final tax divided by the number of periods per year. |
Worked Example
How It Works: A Step-by-Step Example
Assume Tax Year 2024 (r = 4.55%), Monthly pay (f = 12), monthly gross G = $6,000, pre-tax P = $400, annual additions A = $0, annual subtractions S = $0, annual credits C = $300.
Annualize gross and pre-tax:
$$ AG = 6000 \times 12 = 72{,}000 \qquad AP = 400 \times 12 = 4{,}800 $$
Taxable base:
$$ T = \max\big(0, 72{,}000 - 4{,}800 + 0 - 0\big) = 67{,}200 $$
Pre-credit tax:
$$ PC = 0.0455 \times 67{,}200 = 3{,}057.60 $$
Credits applied (capped to PC):
$$ C_a = \min(300,\; 3{,}057.60) = 300 $$
Tax after credits:
$$ TAC = 3{,}057.60 - 300 = 2{,}757.60 $$
Effective rate and per-period tax:
$$ e = \frac{2{,}757.60}{72{,}000} \approx 3.83\% \qquad t_p = \frac{2{,}757.60}{12} = 229.80 $$
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Utah's income tax flat?
Yes. Utah levies a single flat rate on individual income. Select the appropriate tax year to apply the correct rate.
Which pay frequencies are supported?
Annual (1), Monthly (12), Semi-monthly (24), Biweekly (26), and Weekly (52). The tool annualizes your inputs and returns both annual and per-period numbers.
Does the calculator consider federal taxes?
No. This is a state-only tool focused on Utah income tax. Federal income tax and FICA are not included.
Can credits reduce my tax below zero?
No. Nonrefundable credits are capped at the pre-credit Utah tax, so your Utah tax after credits cannot be negative.
How do additions and subtractions work?
They are Utah-specific adjustments to federal income. If none apply, leave both at zero.
Where do the rates come from?
Rates are taken from the Utah State Tax Commission’s official “Tax Rates” page for the indicated tax years.
