Median Calculator
Paste or type your numbers below and get the median instantly. This tool auto-sorts the data and also gives you mean, mode, min, max, range, quartiles, and IQR — so it’s more powerful than standard median-only pages.
You can paste up to a few hundred numbers. We ignore non-numeric and empty entries.
Median formula
1. Order the data: \(x_{(1)} \le x_{(2)} \le \dots \le x_{(n)}\)
2a. If n is odd: median = \(x_{(\frac{n+1}{2})}\)
2b. If n is even: median = \(\frac{x_{(\frac{n}{2})} + x_{(\frac{n}{2} + 1)}}{2}\)
This calculator uses exactly this procedure.
Why median is useful
The median is more robust than the mean when your data have outliers or are skewed. For example, incomes or house prices are often reported with the median because a few very large values would distort the average.
This page gives you median plus companion stats (mean, mode, quartiles) so you can describe your data completely.
FAQs
What if there are repeated values?
Repeated values are fine — they are kept in the sorted list. The median is taken by position, not by uniqueness.
Can I put text in the list?
No, text is ignored. Only numeric values are used. If you paste rows from Excel, the calculator will extract only the numbers it finds.
How are Q1 and Q3 computed?
We use a simple median-of-halves approach: split the sorted data at the median and take medians of lower and upper halves. This is intuitive and works well for quick analysis.
