How this furniture layout calculator works
This furniture layout calculator is a 2D room planner that draws your room and furniture to scale. You can quickly test different arrangements, check walking paths, and make sure everything fits before you move a single piece of furniture.
1. Set your room dimensions
Start by choosing feet or meters, then enter the length and width of your room. The grid automatically rescales so that each square represents a fixed real-world distance (shown in the scale label).
2. Add common furniture pieces
Use the palette to add typical items like sofas, beds, dining tables, desks, and wardrobes. Each item comes with sensible default dimensions based on standard furniture sizes, which you can adjust in the properties panel.
3. Drag, rotate, and resize
- Move: Click and drag an item on the canvas.
- Rotate: Use the small blue handle above the item or type an angle in degrees.
- Resize: Change length and width in the properties panel; the shape updates instantly.
-
Constrain movement: Hold
Shiftwhile dragging to move only horizontally or vertically.
4. Check clearances and walking paths
Good layouts are not just about fitting furniture; they are about comfortable circulation. The clearance checker compares your layout to common interior design guidelines:
- Walkways: Aim for at least 30–36 in (75–90 cm) of clear space in main paths.
- Sofa to coffee table: Typically 14–18 in (35–45 cm) between front of sofa and coffee table.
- Bed sides: At least 24–30 in (60–75 cm) on each accessible side of the bed.
- Dining chairs: Allow 24 in (60 cm) per person around the table and 36–44 in (90–110 cm) behind chairs to walk comfortably.
The tool looks at the relative positions of key items (sofa vs. coffee table, bed vs. walls, dining table vs. room edges) and highlights where your layout is tight or comfortable.
5. Save, share, and iterate
When you like a layout, click Export to copy the JSON description of your room and furniture. You can paste it into a note or email, and later restore it with the Import button. For a visual record, use your browser’s screenshot or print-to-PDF feature.

Best practices for furniture layout
Prioritize function over symmetry
Start by deciding the primary activity of the room (conversation, TV watching, dining, working). Place the key piece (sofa, bed, desk, or table) first, then arrange supporting pieces around it.
Keep traffic paths clear
Identify where people will enter and exit the room and how they will move between doors, windows, and key furniture. Use the grid and clearance checker to maintain comfortable walking paths.
Scale furniture to the room
Oversized furniture in a small room can make it feel cramped, while tiny pieces in a large room can feel lost. Use the calculator to test different sizes and see how they affect circulation and balance.
Furniture layout calculator – FAQ
How accurate is this furniture layout calculator?
The tool is as accurate as the measurements you provide. All items are drawn to scale based on your chosen units. If you measure your room and furniture with a tape measure and enter those values, the layout will closely match real-world spacing.
Can I use this for open-plan or L-shaped rooms?
Yes. For open-plan spaces, model the main zone you are arranging (for example, the living area) as a rectangle. For L-shaped rooms, approximate them as two rectangles and focus on the primary area where furniture sits. You can also add notes in the export JSON to remind yourself of irregularities.
Does this replace professional interior design software?
This calculator is designed for quick, practical planning rather than photorealistic rendering. It is ideal for homeowners, renters, and real estate agents who need fast, to-scale layouts without creating an account or installing apps.
How do I share my layout with someone else?
Use the Export button to copy the JSON text and send it via email or chat. The other person can paste it into the import box on this page to load the exact same layout. You can also share screenshots or print the page to PDF.
