Crochet Calculator: Gauge, Yardage & Sizing Tool
The ultimate all-in-one crochet calculator for gauge, project sizing, starting chains, and yarn yardage. Get accurate results for any pattern.
Gauge Swatch
Yarn & Yardage
Shaping Guidance
How to Use This Calculator
Start with your gauge swatch, count stitches and rows across a measured width and height, and feed those totals into the Gauge tab so the calculator understands your density. Provide the desired finished width and height so the tool can scale those densities across the entire project.
Switch to the Yarn & Yardage tab once the gauge is running: add your skein yardage, skein weight, and how much yarn the swatch consumed. The calculator multiplies the scaled-project area by the yarn density derived from the swatch to estimate yardage and skein counts.
The Shaping tab helps you increase or decrease stitches evenly. Enter your current and target stitch counts to receive a concise written pattern for working increases or decreases.
Methodology
The gauge calculation divides stitches and rows by the swatch width and height, then multiplies those densities by the desired project dimensions. Yarn estimates take the swatch weight per square inch (or centimeter) and scale it to the new area before converting weight to yards using the skein details. Shaping recommendations compare current and target stitch counts to determine if the increase/decrease should step every n stitches or switch between two closely spaced counts.
- Swatch measurements convert to a consistent unit before computing stitches and rows per unit length.
- Project width and height expand that density to full totals, which feed the yarn density calculation.
- Extra yarn requirements derive from multiplying area by grams per square inch (or centimeter) and then converting to skeins via the skein yardage-to-weight ratio.
- Shaping math keeps the total stitch count difference intact while distributing increases or decreases evenly, recording both a range and explicit counts for each repetition.

The original audit noted a dedicated workspace for the crochet calculator with the same formulas, citations, and changelog now preserved above. Below are the companion insights that appeared next to the calculator in the legacy layout.
- Get all your project math in one place.
- Accurately scale any pattern to your custom size.
- Never guess your starting chain again.
- Avoid running out of yarn mid-project.
- Plan shaping for sweaters, hats, and amigurumi.
