Metric prefixes

Metric, Imperial and US customary units
The metric system (SI) scales every unit by powers of ten and underpins all modern definitions — since 1959 even the inch, foot, yard, mile and pound are defined exactly in metric terms. “Imperial” and “US customary” are often treated as one system, but they are not universally identical: lengths and weights match, while volumes differ materially. The Imperial gallon (4.54609 L) is about 20% larger than the US gallon (3.785411784 L), Imperial pints beat US pints, and — counterintuitively — the US fluid ounce is slightly larger than the Imperial one. Any unlabeled “gallon” or “fluid ounce” is therefore ambiguous, which is why this calculator asks instead of guessing.
Exact and approximate conversions
Whether a conversion is exact is a property of the definition, not of how many decimals you see. 1 in = 2.54 cm terminates quickly and is exact; 1 m = 3.280839895… ft has endless decimals yet is equally exact, because both derive from the same exact definition. Conventional values (the 4.184 J calorie, 9.80665 m/s² standard gravity, the 365.25-day Julian year) are exact by agreement. Genuinely approximate factors exist only where a unit rests on a measured constant, like the dalton — and no number of stored digits makes those exact. The calculator labels every result with the correct category.
How conversion factors work
Most conversions are a single multiplication: the value is multiplied by the source unit's factor to reach the quantity's canonical base (meters, kilograms, seconds…), then divided by the target unit's factor. Two families break the simple-multiplier rule. Temperature is affine — °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 — because the scales start at different zeros. Fuel consumption is reciprocal — L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ mpg (US) — because one measures distance per fuel and the other fuel per distance, so halving one doubles the other.
Common conversion mistakes
- US vs Imperial gallons and fluid ounces. A UK “40 mpg” car does about 33 mpg in US gallons; a US pint of beer is 20% smaller than a UK pint. Always label the system.
- Ounce vs fluid ounce. oz is mass (28.35 g); fl oz is volume (29.57 mL US / 28.41 mL Imperial). They only coincide, roughly, for water.
- Mass vs volume. Grams cannot become milliliters without a density. A cup of flour and a cup of honey weigh very different amounts.
- Tonne vs short ton vs long ton. 1000 kg vs 907.18474 kg vs 1016.0469088 kg — an unlabeled “ton” can be off by more than 10%.
- kB vs KiB. Decimal 1000-based and binary 1024-based prefixes diverge by 7.4% at the terabyte scale — the “missing space” on a new drive.
- Mass vs force. Kilograms convert to pounds (mass), not to newtons or pounds-force; weight needs gravity (1 kgf = 9.80665 N by convention).
- US survey vs international foot. They differ by 2 ppm — irrelevant for a room, material for state-plane coordinates; the survey foot was deprecated in 2023.
- Regional cooking measures. A metric cup is 250 mL, a US cup 236.59 mL, an Australian tablespoon 20 mL vs 15 mL elsewhere.
- Rounding too early. Convert with the full factor and round once at the end — chaining rounded factors compounds the error. This engine never rounds internally.
A short history
The meter began in 1795 as one ten-millionth of the pole-to-equator distance and is now defined by the speed of light; the kilogram shed its physical prototype in 2019 for a definition via the Planck constant. The 1959 international yard-and-pound agreement ended centuries of slightly different national inches by fixing 1 yd = 0.9144 m and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly — the reason today's US and UK lengths agree while their older, separately standardized volume measures still differ.

What is a conversion factor?
A conversion factor is the fixed number that relates two units of the same quantity — for example 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters, so the factor from inches to centimeters is 2.54. Multiplying a measurement by the factor changes its unit without changing the physical quantity, because the factor equals one (2.54 cm per 1 in).
What is the difference between US customary and Imperial units?
They share names and history but are not identical systems. Lengths and weights match (the inch, foot, pound and ounce are the same), but volumes differ materially: the US gallon is 3.785411784 L while the Imperial gallon is 4.54609 L, and the US fluid ounce (29.57 mL) is actually larger than the Imperial fluid ounce (28.41 mL) even though the Imperial pint and gallon are larger overall.
Is 1 US gallon the same as 1 Imperial gallon?
No. The US liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches = 3.785411784 liters; the Imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters. An Imperial gallon is about 20% larger, which is why UK and US fuel-economy figures in miles per gallon are not comparable without conversion.
Are unit conversions exact?

How does this calculator round conversion results?
Internal math is never rounded — rounding is applied only when a number is displayed. The default shows up to 10 significant digits with float noise removed; you can switch to 2, 4 or 6 decimal places, significant figures, or the full available precision. The receipt records both the unrounded value and the rounding rule used.
Can I convert volume directly to weight?
No — and a converter that does so silently is guessing. Milliliters measure volume and grams measure mass; the bridge between them is the substance's density. 100 mL of water is about 100 g, but 100 mL of honey is about 142 g and 100 mL of flour about 53 g. This calculator rejects mass↔volume requests and explains why instead of inventing a factor.
What is the difference between a tonne, a short ton and a long ton?
Three different masses that share a name. The tonne (metric ton) is exactly 1000 kg; the US short ton is 2000 lb = 907.18474 kg; the UK long ton is 2240 lb = 1016.0469088 kg. Typing “ton” here prompts you to pick one — a silent default could be wrong by over 10%.
What is the difference between kB and KiB?
A kilobyte (kB) is exactly 1000 bytes using decimal SI prefixes; a kibibyte (KiB) is exactly 1024 bytes using the IEC binary prefixes. The gap grows with size: a gigabyte is 10⁹ bytes but a gibibyte is 2³⁰ ≈ 1.074 × 10⁹ bytes — the classic reason a “1 TB” drive shows up as about 931 GiB.
Why does my ounce conversion look wrong?
Probably because “ounce” names several units. The avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g) is mass; the fluid ounce is volume, and the US (29.57 mL) and Imperial (28.41 mL) versions differ; the troy ounce (31.10 g) is used for precious metals. This calculator keeps them separate and asks which one you mean when the term is ambiguous.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, so 100 °C = 212 °F. Going the other way, °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Temperature is the one everyday conversion that is not a simple multiplication, because the two scales start from different zero points.
How do I convert miles per gallon to liters per 100 km?
They are reciprocal representations: one measures distance per fuel, the other fuel per distance. L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ mpg (US), so 30 mpg (US) ≈ 7.84 L/100 km. Note that Imperial mpg uses the larger UK gallon, so the constant differs (282.481).
