Score Summary

How bowling scoring works

A standard game of ten-pin bowling has 10 frames. In each of the first 9 frames you can roll up to two balls to knock down 10 pins. The 10th frame can have up to three rolls if you score a strike or spare.

Basic frame types

  • Open frame: You do not knock down all 10 pins in two rolls. Your score for that frame is just the total pins knocked down.
  • Spare (/): You knock down all 10 pins using both rolls in the frame. The frame scores 10 + pins from your next single roll.
  • Strike (X): You knock down all 10 pins with the first roll. The frame scores 10 + pins from your next two rolls.

Scoring formulas (frames 1–9)

  • Open frame: Frame score = R1 + R2
  • Spare: Frame score = 10 + next roll
  • Strike: Frame score = 10 + next two rolls

The 10th frame

  • If you roll an open frame (no strike or spare), you only get two rolls.
  • If you roll a spare, you get one extra bonus roll in the 10th frame.
  • If you roll a strike, you get two extra bonus rolls in the 10th frame.

All pins knocked down in the 10th frame (including bonus rolls) are added directly to your total score. The maximum possible score is 300, achieved with 12 consecutive strikes.

Example: mixed game

Consider this sequence for one player:

  • Frame 1: X (strike)
  • Frame 2: 7 / (spare)
  • Frame 3: 9 – (9 and gutter)

The scoring is:

  • Frame 1 = 10 + 7 + 3 (next two rolls) = 20
  • Frame 2 = 10 + 9 (next roll) = 19 (cumulative 39)
  • Frame 3 = 9 + 0 = 9 (cumulative 48)

What is a good bowling score?

  • Beginner: 80–130
  • Casual/recreational: 130–170
  • League bowler: 170–200+
  • Competitive/advanced: 200–220+ (with occasional 250+ games)

Use this calculator after each game or league night to track your progress and see how close you are to your next milestone.

Tips for using this bowling score calculator

  • Enter scores frame by frame as you bowl, or copy them from a paper score sheet afterward.
  • Use X for strikes, / for spares, and for gutters (0 pins).
  • If you prefer numbers only, you can enter 0–9 for each roll; the tool will still apply bonuses correctly.
  • Use the presets to see how a perfect game (300) or a consistent 9-miss game (90) looks frame by frame.

FAQ

How do you calculate a bowling score?

Add up the scores from each of the 10 frames, applying bonuses for strikes and spares. An open frame is just the pins knocked down. A spare adds the pins from your next roll. A strike adds the pins from your next two rolls. The calculator automates this logic and shows a running total.

Can I track multiple players?

Yes. Use the Players dropdown to select up to 4 players. Each player gets a full 10-frame sheet and their own total and average per frame.

Does this work for 9-pin or other bowling variants?

This tool is designed for standard ten-pin bowling. Some rules carry over to other variants, but scoring systems like 9-pin, candlepin, or duckpin may differ.

Why does the calculator show a warning?

The validation system checks for impossible combinations, such as more than 10 pins in a frame, a spare without a first roll, or illegal bonus rolls in the 10th frame. Fix the highlighted frame to clear the warning.
