How the BC tax calculator works

The calculator follows the same basic steps the CRA and BC Ministry of Finance use:

  1. Calculate total income = employment income + other taxable income.
  2. Subtract RRSP contributions (up to your RRSP room) to get taxable income.
  3. Apply federal tax brackets to taxable income to get gross federal tax.
  4. Apply BC tax brackets to the same taxable income to get gross provincial tax.
  5. Subtract non‑refundable credits (basic personal amounts + any extra credits you enter) multiplied by the lowest federal and BC rates.
  6. Add CPP and EI if enabled.
  7. Compute net (take‑home) income = total income − income tax − CPP − EI.

Effective tax rate

Effective tax rate = (Federal tax + BC tax) ÷ Total income

BC tax calculator – frequently asked questions

Does BC have its own tax brackets?

Yes. British Columbia has its own set of progressive provincial tax brackets that apply on top of federal tax. Your total income tax is the sum of federal and provincial tax, minus credits.

Are sales taxes (GST/PST) included?

No. This calculator focuses on income tax, CPP and EI. It does not estimate GST or BC PST on purchases.

How can I reduce my BC income tax?

  • Contribute to an RRSP (within your contribution room).
  • Claim eligible deductions (e.g., union dues, child care, moving expenses).
  • Use available non‑refundable credits (tuition, disability, spouse, age amount, etc.).
  • Consider income‑splitting strategies where allowed and appropriate.
